Subject Aim

Understand the principles of sound art and generative sound creation through in-depth study of the history, theory, methods and practices of 20th and 21st century art and electronic music. To develop a deeper understanding of sound as a material in art and the creation of the concept of a work of art in sound art. To gain practical skills in creating sound installations and composing electronic music and generative sound.

To develop the necessary skills to use sound in the context of new media. To create a sound art project that demonstrates the ability to realise an artistic idea by applying knowledge of electronic music and sound installations.

Subject Content

The module is meant to gain a deeper understanding of sound art and generative sound composition by studying the history, theory, methods of art and electronic music in the 20th and the 21st centuries and gaining practical skills for sound installation, electronic music and generative sound composition.

Expected Results

After completing the course, the student has:

A deeper understanding of the context and the history and theory of electronic music and sound art in the 20th and the 21st century and sound as a material in arts. Understands the historic development and classification of sound installation as a form of artwork, different strategies of electronic music composition.

Understands the principles of generative sound composition and fundamentals of audio programming and can create generative sound by using different software;

Can choose and apply sound equipment according to needs of the art project. Has gained knowledge about audio equipment, signals and rooting, custom electronics for creating sound and sound generating systems in sound installations and is familiar with innovation and trends in sound technology today.
