Subject Aim

Objective:

To develop an understanding of the evolution of photography as a medium, the changes in form, content, narrative and approach of photography from the beginning of the discovery of the technique to the present day.

 

Tasks:

To provide an overview of the history and development of photographic media (image making) up to the present day.

To develop an understanding of the development of photography and the different genres, directions and approaches.

Providing an insight into the history of photography - highlighted artists, works and series.

To provide skills and abilities in reasoned evaluation and commentary on photography.

Subject Content

The module examines the photo medium, its history and techniques. The module offers both

Expected Results

⋅     Student has an analytical, critical, and methodical approach to viewing, evaluating, and commenting on photographs.

⋅     Student has sufficient understanding of the development of photography in the context of art history, and the development of genres and approaches in different time periods.

⋅     Student can orient themselves and recognize the works and characteristics of key photographers in the art history and can comment on their significance.

⋅     Student has basic photography skills. Ability to plan and realize an original photo series (documentation, street photo, journalism).

⋅     Student has understanding of the technology of creating a photographic image, its importance and the possibilities of creative application in modern art, design or economy.

⋅     Student freely manages the “creative modes” of the camera (aperture, shutter speed, matrix sensitivity).

⋅     Student has acquired knowledge in composition (picture idea, visual structure, framing, format, tonality, color, etc.).

Student can appreciate the artistic difference, meaning and application of a digital (file) and printed (photo paper of various types and other usable surfaces) image.

Requirements to gain ECTS

2 original photo series,

1 independently prepared seminar presentation.
