Subject Aim

To master German literature XX.gs. The main lines of the literary process and the most visible works of authors, to present XX century classical heritage.

Subject Content

The course acquaints students with the main directions and basic trends in the XX c. German literary process, including specificity of the turn of the XIX and XX century (pluralism of styles) with fundamental features of German expressionism and the most significant authors, with basic premises of outstanding writers’ literary pieces – Thomas Mann, Heinrich Mann, H.Hesse and others. Special focus is on literary activities by Brecht, Remark, Feuchtwanger, Hoffmannstal, Benn, Hauptman, Rilke and Georg.

In post-war literature the main accent is on specific character of the development of German literature after the defeat of Nazism. The main authors are Bachmann, Enzensberger, Eich, Bell, Grass, Keppen and others. Specificity of German lyrics is accentuated in the context of modernism and post-modernism.

Expected Results

-academic competence - knowledge of the XX. century German literature and its major representatives;
-professional competencies - the skills and abilities to present their  own knowledge in German literature and analyze literary texts.

Requirements to gain ECTS

Lecture attendance, participation in seminars with presentations, text analysis exercises and reading compulsory literature.
