Development and history of social work in the world

Subject Aim

The aim of Part I of this course is to:

To acquaint students with the basic concepts and principles of social work in a historical perspective, encouraging an understanding of the trends that affect social work. To create a knowledge base for practical activities and further studies, developing students' ability to independently obtain and compile, analyze and use historical information.

II. Purpose of the part:

1. to acquaint students with various global social problems related to social welfare and social development in the world;

2. to interest students in international social work;

3. to analyze social welfare issues from a global perspective, students will explore how political, economic, cultural, religious, historical and environmental factors affect social welfare policies and social security services in different regions of the world;

4. Students will be able to analyze differences in national models and interventions in international services, as well as learn how social work practices are implemented in other parts of the world. The geographical context of this course will be mainly Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Asia. Particular emphasis will be placed on conceptualization in international social work practice, analysis of theories and models, explaining strategies for using international approaches to social welfare and social development to help developing countries around the world.

Subject Content

The study course consists of two parts.

 Part I gives students the opportunity to gain knowledge about the essence of social work from a historical perspective. The course includes the most important issues - the historical view of social work, the founders of social work - theorists, practitioners. Development of social work schools. The beginnings and development of social work in Latvia. Theoretical basis and practice of social work during the Soviet regime. Stage of social work renewal. 

II. some offer students knowledge of various global social issues related to social well-being and social development in today's world. Students will learn to critically analyze the impact of economic, cultural, religious, governmental and non-governmental, historical and environmental factors on social welfare policies and their implementation worldwide.   

Expected Results

Improved understanding of the essence of social work, development, professionalization, mission.

Understands the interconnections of historical events in the development of social work.

An understanding of the most important issues related to social welfare in the world has been created.

Acquired or expanded theoretical knowledge of social welfare in a global perspective. 

Requirements to gain ECTS

Assessment consists of: (1) work in lectures, seminars, practical work - 50%; (2) completion of independent work - 50%.
