Admission requirements:

Duration of studies is 2,5 years – Bachelor degree in Computer Sciences or Information Technologies;

Duration of studies 3 years – Bachelor degree in Mathematics or in Physics.

A thesis (5 to 10 pages) about a free chosen and topical research problem in the field of Computer Sciences or Information Technologies;

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Even though there is no National Qualifications Framework in Latvia, Liepaja University implements the Qualifications Framework as established within the framework of the Bologna process. Accumulation of credits is documented in the official institutional transcript of record and in the Diploma Supplement. 

 

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the second level professional higher education Master’s study programme “Information technology” is to educate high qualification specialists for professional activity in the field of information and communication technology with specialization in software engineering or management of information technology projects. 

Main tasks for achieving the aim:

to create opportunities for students to acquire second level professional higher education in the field of information and communication technology (ICT);

to develop ability to understand, evaluate and use global tendency in context of state’s regional development, and to ensure the development of acquired knowledge, skills, abilities and professional treatment according to requirements of labour market;

to promote satisfaction of need for self-education and partcipation in further education;

to develop proficiency in research work and creative approach to software engineering or solutions of management problems;

to provide connection between academic and businesslike reasearches and study work and solve professional problems, involving students in researches about current problems in information technologies;

to promote proper understanding of professional ethics standarts and to observe it at work and socal life;

to prepare professional masters in information technologies, who could successfully continue their studies in doctoral programmes in any of ITT science fields or interdisciplinary study programmes.

 

Key Learning Outcomes

The student receives professional qualification of the professional Master degree, when he/she has fully acquired the study programme, has obtained practical skills during implementation of qualification and Master practices, has elaborated and successfully defended the diploma project and the master paper. 

During the studies software engineer obtains knowledge and skills, which are necessary for elaboration of software, its introduction and maintenance according to the functionality, quality and resource conditions, organisation and management of programmer workgroups, as well as systematic improvement of knowledge and skills.

In its turn, information technology project manager acquires knowledge and skills, which are necessary for elaboration and introduction of the necessary software, planning, organizing and monitoring of maintenance projects, as well as for implementation of information technology consultations or system audit projects, and management according to the branch standards and quality requirements.

 

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

After obtaining Professional Master’s degree graduates can work in organizations that carry out software development, deployment, maintenance, providing information technology consulting and information systems audit.

 

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the programme can continue studies in Third Cycle (Doctoral Degree).

The size of the Professional Master’s study programme is 100 credit points (CP) for 2,5 years, and 120 (CP) for 3 years.

 

 

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

 

System of assessment:
Assessment of the students’ knowledge is continuous process during the whole semester on the basis of their independent assignments and tests, as well as twice a year, passing credit tests and examinations. 
During the semester each course envisages several independent assignments:
• practical and labaratory works, which are handed in for the lecturer to correct and are quite often discussed and analysed in detail together with the lecturer;
• tests, that give the lecturer an opportunity to follow how the students are making progress during the semester when studying the course;
• reports which are defended in front of students. 
At the end of each course students sit for a written or oral examination or credit test. In some courses, during which both lectures and laboratory works are planned, students take both a credit test and an examination. Assessment is made in a ten-point scale or with the help of a credit test. The lowest pass mark is 4 points (“alsmost satisfactory”).
 
The ten-point accepted by the Ministry of Education and Science has been used for the formal assessment of students’ knowledge. The following documents approved by the university Senate (Board) regulate the evaluation of the learning outcomes:
- Regulation of the studies and higher-level studies 
(approved by the Senate on 20.12.2010; amendments on 19.12.2011);
- Rules on the course examinations 
(approved by the Senate on 20.12.2010);
- The rules on the final examinations and state examinations
(approved by the Senate on 20.12.2010; amendments on 17.12.2012);
- Rules on obligations and rights of academic staff and students 
(approved by the Senate on 21.02.2011).
 
Requirements of the study programme:
Requirements for getting the professional degree and qualification (has to be described in compliance with point 4.2. - diploma's supplement.
 
Professional Master’s degree and the fifth level qualification is awarded to the student, who has successfully completed the study courses in the study programme and passed the Master’s examination with a grade not lower than 5 – “satisfactory”. 
During the course of studies programming engineer acquires knowledge, masters skills and abilities, needed for designing and installing software and providing it according requirements for functionality, quality and capacity of resources to organise and lead programmers’ work, as well systematic improvement of knowledge and skills; to write and defend dimploma project,with a grade not lower than 5 – “satisfactory”.
For its part, Information Technology Project Manager acquires knowledge, masters skills and abilities needed for for designing, installing and maintaining software for palnning, organising and supervising of a project, as well as for information technology’s consultation or carrying out and leading information system’s audit project in compliance with the field’s standarts and quality requirements; write and defend diploma project, with a grade not lower than 5 – “satisfactory”.
 

 

Graduation Requirements

 

For 2,5 years programme student must complete 150 ECTS (100 CP) and all programme requirements.
For 3 years programme student must complete 180 ECTS (120 CP) and all programme requirements.
