Smart Sustainable Cities in Baltic Sea Region

Smart-Up BSR Tallinn Innovation Camp 2018

Smart Sustainable Cities in Baltic Sea Region

come get inspired | come learn | come get smarter

September 17-19, 2018, Tallinn, Estonia

How can a city become smarter? What makes places attractive to global talent? How to improve public space and reduce segregation?

The world is experiencing growing urbanization. At the same time, the population in Europe is ageing, which means that countries, regions and cities in Europe must compete for global talent if they want to remain competitive on the global scale. Cities in Europe are also often facing the segregation of minority groups and people with lower socio-economic backgrounds to outdated “dormitory” districts, where the overall living environment is dull and often perceived as dangerous.

Smart-Up BSR Tallinn Innovation Camp, organized by the City of Tallinn together with Aalto University, brings together close to 100 participants from Baltic Sea Region to innovate around the topics of sustainable smart city, digitalisation, public engagement and co-creation.

Inspired by prominent smart city experts from Estonia and Finland, BSR representatives from cities, regional development organizations, academia and NGOs concerned with making cities both “smarter” and more livable will work around three major challenges:

1) How to increase citizen participation and promote co-creation to improve the living environment and quality of life? 2) How to smarten up the region? 3) How to make the city digital with the help of artificial intelligence and co-creation?

Coordinated by professor Taina Tukiainen at Aalto University, Smart-Up BSR is a project that builds a continuous engagement process for cities in the Baltic Sea Region to tackle their societal and development challenges in collaboration with different stakeholders and across the geographical borders in a series of innovation camps.
